With student finance applications now open for Welsh and English students, it’s time to start thinking about starting your application. As applying for student finance may seem daunting, we’ve put together a brief overview of everything you need to know.
Student finance is available to help make the cost of going to university more manageable.
You are eligible to apply for two separate loans, a Tuition Fee Loan and a Maintenance Loan. A Tuition Fee Loan is available to cover the cost of your tuition fees, whilst a Maintenance Loan is available to help towards the cost of living. Although the Tuition Fee Loan is the same amount for all eligible students, the amount you may receive for your Maintenance Loan is dependent on personal circumstance.
You may also be eligible to apply for additional financial help. You can find out more about this on our website.
How to Apply
To apply for student finance you’ll need to visit the specific student finance webpage relevant to where you live. You’ll find a comprehensive guide on how to apply for student finance on our website.
As part of the application process, you will be asked for evidence to support your application. In most cases, this can be provided by just filling in the details asked on the application form. If any further evidence is required, Student Finance will contact you. If you need to change any of your details before starting your course, you can do this by using your online student finance account.
You need to re-apply for student finance for each year of study (you will be contacted when it’s time to re-apply), so make sure you keep your log-in details safe!
You’ll find lots of useful information and videos online to help you with your application, such as the following by Student Finance England.
When to Apply
If you are a Welsh or English student, applications for 2017 entry are now open.
It’s important to note that you don’t need a confirmed place at university before starting your application - just create your student finance account and apply using your preferred choice of course. You can then change the details once you’ve accepted your offer.
Make sure you take a look at the relevant student finance website to find out your deadline for applying. We recommend that you apply as soon as possible to get everything in place for the start of term.
