Another Development Week has been and gone here at the University of Chester, and what a brilliant week it was. Each year the Student Support and Guidance team arrange a wide variety of activities for our students to get involved in and learn something new for free. You can see the full schedule of events here.
The sessions we were particularly looking forward to from this year’s calendar included the Communication Confidence session. This session aimed to make our students more confident face-to-face communicators - a key skill that can be used in interviews, or when delivering presentations to people on your course or for a job. The session identifies what makes a person an effective communicator and recognises each individual’s strengths by practising professional communication in an interactive session.
The Personal Branding session was another great event. This session helped students focus on their future and helped them take steps to stand out from the crowd - in person, on paper and online. The session helped students to find out how to build their personal and professional brand to make a positive impression with potential employers and make themselves memorable for all the right reasons. Once you have finished this session, you will know how to soar with your strengths, to productively pursue your employment passions, and how to communicate, collaborate and connect using ‘Brand You’ skills.
Finally, the Managing Exam Anxiety session is a key one for all students. It’s normal to get stressed when the exam timetable lands on your lap and you have deadlines looming as well. No-one said getting your degree was easy! This session helped students to develop their own ‘Personal resilience plan’, and by the end of the session they had the skills to ‘Think smart’ in understanding what stress is; understand how stress can affect them and what triggers it; ‘Work smart’ in managing their workload; use valuable hints and tips on how to maintain their resilience; and build their own plan to reduce any anxiety they may have around exam time.
If you missed this Development Week, then don’t worry! Our Careers and Employability team are on hand and run a number of similar sessions throughout the year as part of their EYE Training. You can find out more about these sessions by visiting the EYE Training pages of our website and setting up an account on CareerHub.
