If you’re thinking about starting university next year, then it’s time to start researching your options. With so many different universities and courses to choose from, there’s a lot you need to consider. No matter how much research you do at home, the best way to get a real feel for a university is to attend an Open Day and see it for yourself.
To ensure you get the most out of any upcoming Open Days make sure to:
1) Be prepared
There are a lot of activities to get involved in at an Open Day, from Campus Tours, accommodation viewings, information fairs and mock lectures. Before you arrive familiarise yourself with the timetable. It can be difficult to fit everything in, so make sure you make time for the things that are important to you. Whilst scheduled talks are important, it’s also vital to take the time to sit back and soak up the vibe on campus.
* Top tip: Give yourself plenty of time by setting off early and arranging transport in advance.
2) Ask questions
With so many courses and universities to choose from, it’s important to make sure you find the university that’s right for you. You might be wondering about the workload, any study abroad opportunities, or what clubs and societies are available to join? Whatever you want to know, just ask! Open Days are the perfect opportunity to get your questions answered, whether that’s by academics, support staff or even student ambassadors.
* Top tip: Make the most of student ambassadors. As current students they have been there and done it, making them a great source of advice.
3) Go and explore
Whilst what is happening at the university will be your main priority, it’s also a good idea to go and explore the local area too. After all, this might be your new home for the next three years. So, leave a little time to go and see the town or city, or, why not stay the night?
* Top tip: At Chester, we are running Chester City Walking Tours, which are a great way to see the sites of Chester with the help of local tour guides.
