From humble beginnings come great things... our campuses

Over 175 years ago our humble beginnings looked very different to the University of Chester you may recognise today. Our life began as a purpose-built teacher training college in 1839 - the first in the country, and it was based on just one corner of the now Parkgate Road Campus.

We still offer teacher training, but this is just one of almost 400 single and combined course options we now have available. Just as our course list has expanded, so have our sites, and we now have six large learning sites, hospital sites, and a number of smaller learning sites located near to the Parkgate Road Campus.

The site that you’re based at will depend on the course you’re interested in studying, and in this blog we hope to provide you with an overview of each of the sites we have at Chester.

Our six large learning sites include:

Parkgate Road Campus

Parkgate Road

Home to a variety of departments, in addition to many of the University’s central services, such as: our award winning Student Support and Guidance; Careers and Employability; and Chester Students’ Union. A selection of residential halls are also available onsite, and it is only a short distance from the lively city centre of Chester.

Kingsway Buildings

The Kingsway Buildings are home to the Faculty of Arts and Media. An engaging environment to be creative in; it houses a fantastic range of course specific facilities, in addition to 11 state-of-the-art IT labs, an art gallery, an outdoor courtyard performance space, and two catering outlets.

Hospital Sites

If you’re interested in studying one of our Nursing courses, you could be based at either our Riverside Campus, Warrington Campus or hospital sites in Leighton or Clatterbridge.

Smaller Learning Sites

Law School

We have a couple of buildings that are located opposite the Parkgate Road Campus, such as Hollybank: Home to the Theology and Religious Studies Department, and the Old Vicarage: home to the Department of English. Our Law School is based only a short walk away from the Parkgate Road Campus at 67 Liverpool Road.

With so many sites, you may be worried about the distance – but the great thing about our sites in Chester, is that they’re all within walking distance of each other. Furthermore, as our Chester sites are so near to the beautiful city of Chester, it’s a great way to explore the city you could be calling home for the next 3 to 4 years. For our Thornton Science Park, we provide students with free transportation at regular intervals throughout the day, and although our Warrington Campus has accommodation on site, we also provide a free inter-campus shuttle bus - should you fancy coming to the Parkgate Road Campus.

Irrelevant of where you may be based, as a University of Chester student you will have full access to our learning facilities, our fantastic support services such as Student Support and Guidance, and Careers and Employability, and our award winning Chester Students’ Union.
