The Mathematics student experience – the formula for success

If you’re wondering what it’s really like to study a Mathematics degree at Chester, there’s no better way of finding out than by visiting us and meeting the staff who make our Mathematics degree one of the most inspiring in the country.

There’s been a lot going on over the last 12 months, all of which contribute to ensuring our students receive the best possible student experience. Here’s a brief update on the latest events and accomplishments from the Department of Mathematics.

New Home at regions leading Science Park

Mathematics at Thornton Science Park

In the summer of 2014, the Department of Mathematics relocated to the University’s newest campus, Thornton Science Park.  Thornton is formerly the site of Shell Technology, Exploration and Research Centre and is regarded as a major research and innovation hub for the North West. It is also home to the University’s High Growth Centre, a unique entrepreneurial centre that combines industry and innovation with academia.

So, what does this mean for you? Well, should you choose to study Mathematics at Chester, you’ll be studying at a distinctive campus where University staff and students rub shoulders with professionals from a variety of manufacturing and engineering businesses. You’ll also be studying at a campus that includes state of the art teaching and research facilities, and is linked to the Parkgate Road Campus in Chester by a regular free shuttle bus service.

100% Course Satisfaction

We were also extremely pleased to learn that, last summer, our BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree was ranked first in the UK for course satisfaction, with a score of 100% in the National Student Survey. In addition to this, the survey put our quality of teaching, at 97%, within the top ten of such Mathematics degrees in the UK.

We have always been committed to providing first-rate support for our students, not just in lectures but outside of the classroom too. Students are always given the opportunity to meet with staff for tutorials, either on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. And we’re dedicated to this personalised approach because we know this can make a huge difference to ensuring our students leave Chester with a good degree.  After all, that’s what going to university is really all about!

Furthermore, we’ve recently re-validated our undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes to ensure that they are still current and relevant to the needs of employers. As part of this process our undergraduate degree programme is recognised by the IMA (Institute of Mathematics and its Applications).

Research Recognition

For a long time now, the Department of Mathematics has been highly research-active and we are delighted to have recently gained recognition from the reviewers of the recent 2014 Research Excellence Framework, who noted that the mathematics research undertaken at Chester includes work that is world-leading and internationally excellent. This is obviously great news for the Department, especially because it helps to add value to the degrees we deliver at Chester. To help ensure that our students are exposed to modern Mathematics and its applications, all research interests of the Department feed into our curriculum.

Staff Reinforcements

In line with the recent growth and successes, we have recently welcomed a number of new additions to our team of budding mathematicians. We are delighted that Dr Dimitra Antonopoulou has joined us from the University of Crete as a Senior Lecturer, Dr Fotini Karakatsani from the University of Strathclyde as a Lecturer, and Dr Judy Ford who has joined us as a part-time Senior Lecturer, having had a long career both in academia and the NHS.
