In the 2015 National Student Survey (NSS), the Department of Theology and Religious Studies (TRS) at Chester scored 100% for student satisfaction, placing it equal first out of all the TRS departments in the UK.
Voted for by current students, the NSS represents honest feedback on real student experiences. With results like this, it’s clear to see that our students think Chester is an inspiring place to study TRS.
To show you what sets Chester apart from other Theology and/or Religious Studies courses in the UK, we thought we would highlight some of great things that showcase the kind of Department we are, and why Chester should be the University of choice when it comes to studying TRS.
We have one of the largest TRS departments in the UK
How does this benefit you? Well, with over 20 academic staff, including experts in all three main areas of Theology, Biblical Studies and Religious Studies, we have the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver an exciting breadth of modules. And with all of us on hand throughout your studies, you’ll always have access to the support you need, whenever you need it.
Our TRS students get jobs
In fact, an impressive 97% of our graduates are employed or in further study within six months of graduating. To make this happen we design modules and courses with employability in mind; enhancing skills that can set you apart from other graduates. Past students have gone on to work in various roles, from charity work, government, health care, publishing, financial services, teaching, and many more.
A place to call home
TRS is located in Hollybank, a two-storey Victorian building just a short two minute walk from our main Parkgate Road Campus. With a designated study room fully kitted out with computers, as well as a student hang-out and kitchen, Hollybank really is a place where our students feel at home. There are three purpose-built teaching rooms and even seating outside for when the sun comes out! And, with the large majority of our staff offices located in this building, you can pop in for a chat whenever you need.
Gain experience whilst you study
There’s more to learning than books. Our fantastic Work Based Learning (WBL) module really brings theory to life. And, if you’re interested in teaching Religious Education (RE), we offer our own RE module, where you can undertake a brief school placement. Taught by Dr Wendy Dossett; a senior A-Level RS principal examiner, and the representative of all UK Higher Education departments of TRS on the Religious Education Council of England and Wales, you’ll have the perfect mentor on hand every step of the way.
Discover TRS in the wider world
Theology and Religious Studies is a global subject, and we aim to provide you with opportunities to experience different cultures and religious contexts both in the UK and abroad. Whether that's taking part in fieldwork in Bangalore, Jerusalem, or Istanbul or visiting regional places of worship or religious centres, you get to experience religion as it is lived and practised in ordinary life.
